Perception of employees' productivity when working remotely
To elicit employers’ perception of potential effects of remote work, they were asked whether they believe employees to be less or more productive, creative or satisfied when they work remotely roughly two days a week as compared to working on-site their entire working time.
21% of employers think that employees working remotely twice a week are more productive as compared to working on-site the entire working time. While 34% of employers do not expect a positive or negative effect on worker productivity, more than one quarter of employers (27%) report lower levels of productivity if employees work remotely. Overall, 18% of firms have not answered this question.
Some sectoral differences emerge. The Manufacturing sector has the highest proportion of companies considering their employees less productive when working remotely (33%). By contrast, companies in the Information and communication and Financial and insurance activities sectors are more likely to report higher employee productivity when working remotely.

While 22% consider that remote working has a negative effect and 16% a positive effect, 44% believe that it has no impact on employees’ creativity. Once again, sectoral differences emerge: companies in the Manufacturing sector are more likely to report a negative impact of remote working on employee creativity, whereas those in the Information and communication sector are more likely to report a positive impact.

By contrast, employers are much more likely to perceive positive effects of remote working on employee job satisfaction. 46% believe that remote working improves job satisfaction, while only 7% of companies report negative effects. Companies in the Information and communication and Financial and insurance activities sectors are particularly positive about the impact of remote working on job satisfaction. Around 70% of companies in these sectors expect employees to be more satisfied with their jobs when they have the opportunity to work remotely two days per week.
